7 Signs You Need a Water Heater Replacement, Not Another Repair

Published 2026-08-10 · Denver Water Heater Service Center

Every water heater eventually crosses a line where another repair stops making financial sense. Here's how to tell which side of that line yours is on.

1. The tank itself is leaking

A leak from a fitting, valve, or connection is usually repairable. A leak from the tank body — the steel shell itself — means internal corrosion has breached the tank, and there's no safe way to patch or weld it. Tank-body leaks always mean replacement.

2. It's over 10-12 years old

Most standard tank units are rated for 8-12 years. Past that range, the cost-benefit of a repair shifts — you're often spending real money to extend the life of a unit that's already near failure elsewhere.

3. You've had multiple repairs in the past year

One repair on an otherwise healthy unit is normal wear and tear. Two or three in a short window usually signals a unit in overall decline rather than one isolated failure.

4. Rusty water or a rusted tank exterior

Rust in your hot water, or visible rust around the tank's base or fittings, points to internal corrosion that a repair can't reverse.

5. Reduced hot water capacity that doesn't improve with a flush

If you've had the tank flushed and you're still running out of hot water noticeably faster than before, sediment buildup may be permanent, or the tank may simply be undersized for your household now.

6. Loud, worsening noise during heating cycles

Rumbling and popping usually mean heavy sediment buildup. In an older tank, this can also indicate the tank material itself is starting to weaken under the stress of repeated heating cycles.

7. You're changing how you use hot water

An addition, a new bathroom, or a growing household are all good reasons to reconsider capacity even if your current unit isn't failing yet — replacement is the natural time to resize.

If any of this sounds familiar, our water heater replacement team can give you an honest read on your specific unit, including whether a repair still makes sense.
